Red-tagging or red-baiting means the harassment or persecution of a person because of known or suspected communist sympathies. According to the dissenting opinion in Zarate vs Aquino III Supreme Court Associate, Justice Marvic Leonen cited a 2011 journal article that defined red-baiting as: “the act of labeling, branding, naming and accusing individuals and/ or organizations of being left-leaning, subversives, communists or terrorists (used as) a strategy...by State agents, particularly law enforcement agencies and the military, against those perceived to be ‘threats’ or ‘enemies of the State’.". Organizations that are frequently subject in the Philippines includes civil groups, religious institutions, health worker unions, academia, and mainstream and alternative media for they are against in the wrong doing of the government. Red-tagging is dangerous for us. It threatens the lives and safety of the people. The act of red-tagging human-rights defenders constitutes a grave threat to their lives, liberty, and security. It distorts the nature of their work and makes them susceptible to attacks and number of violations. Since 2016, Red tagging has caused an impact in terms of the number of systematic killings due to drug-related operations of police. Red-tagging is inevitable for the government has always a whole of their wrong doing. People and other organization just want them to be heard. But people in the government are deaf and blind. The cannot blame people if they do red-tagging for they just want to claim their rights.
